Troop 1906

“Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.”

Is there a better way to help achieve the Alpha Phi Alpha mission than Scouting?  Boy Scout Troop 1906 builds future leaders by combining educational activities and lifelong values training via a scouting program for young people that builds character and trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship while encouraging personal fitness and having fun.

Troop 1906 was established in 2004 as a joint venture between Bethlehem Baptist Church and the Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Its purpose was to co-sponsor a Boy Scout troop to serve the historic Gum Springs (Alexandria) community.

Since 2004 Troop 1906, with the support of Xi Alpha Lambda and Bethlehem Baptist Church, has produced three eagle Scouts – the highest rank a male youth can obtain in Scouting. They are future leaders for this country and our communities. Those Scouts are Emmanuel Lewis, Michael Freeman, II, and Stephen Redmon.  Here’s a brief look at these future leaders and what they are doing now:

Where are they now?

Emmanuel Lewis – currently attending University of South Carolina; majoring in International Business.  He is a Capstone Scholar and on the Presidential Honor Roll.

Jabari Redmon – currently attending the Air Force Academy, (ranked 33 of over 1050 cadets in his class). He is planning to pursue a career in medicine.

Michael Freeman, II – currently attending Old Dominion University and plans to major in Business Management (w/concentration in Finance).

Emmanuel, Jabari, and Michael have helped to solidly establish Troop 1906 in the Gum Springs community but the Scouting program doesn’t end with them.  Other Scouts have watched them and are actively emulating them.  Here are the next Eagle Scouts from Troop 1906:

Bryce Furrow (L) – currently serves as the Troop Guide and former Senior Patrol Leader. Bryce is a lifeguard and is working on completing his eagle service project at Walt Whitman Middle School. We anticipate that he will achieve the rank of eagle in the summer of 2016

Kobe Franklin (R) – currently serves as the Troop Senior Patrol Leader. Kobe is an accomplished basketball player and is working on completing his last three eagle merit badges. Once those are done he will prepare and submit a proposal for an eagle service project that he will organize, plan, and oversee. We anticipate that he will achieve the rank of eagle in 2017.

Aspiring Eagle Scouts

Not to be outdone, here are the other members of Troop 1906 at their Fall Court of Honor with Xi Alpha Lambda.  We want all of them to soar like eagles.

  • Origins of Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter

In the late summer of 1980, the idea of establishing an Alpha Phi Alpha chapter that would be directed towards serving the communities of Prince William and Southern Fairfax Counties took momentum. It was on May 31, 1981, that 34 brothers chartered Xi Alpha Lambda (XAL) in Prince William County, VA as Key Number #590. The men of XAL Chapter consists mostly of active and retired military officers, government civilians and businessmen. We are leaders in the community who are constantly striving to project the positive image of Alpha men as Servants of All.
